I just bought a new 19″ widescreen monitor – how do I get the resolution correct?

I have an older HP Pavilion and the monitor just died. I decided to upgrade to an AOC widescreen 19" LCD. Now everything looks "stretched" and my appearance settings don't allow for the 1440 x 900 resolution. The HP Specialist said I need a new Graphics Card and recommended nvidia agp graphics cards. Anyone have additional advice or input? I'm no computer whiz and don't need anything fancy!
Thanks!

here u go, its an ATI 3850, an amazing card, will allow u to play all your games, and make them look great on your new moniter
The hp specialist is right but maybe should have explained his answer a bit more, basically the new monitor that you have bought for your hp pavillion uses a graphics card that does not support resolutions that the monitor has such as 1440x 900, etc. The only option would be to replace the graphics card for one that would accept the correct solution.
2 options, either take the computer to a computer store and ask for a new graphics card to be installed or buy one and install it yourself. it’s not hard, its a case of opening the computer, unscrewing the graphics card from the back of the case, pull it upwards, not at an angle and replace with the new graphics card, when putting the new graphics card in, push straight down with equal pressure, replace the screw and boot the machine up, now go to the graphics card manufacturers website, the link to this will come with the graphics card and install the latest drivers for the card, this will mean that it is fully up to date, then it would be a case of changing the resolution. Hope that helps, if any more information is needed then just ask.
