How can I get my toshiba laptop to 1440 X 900. I’m connecting it to a 19″ widecscreeen Viewsonic monitor

I've got my Toshiba laptop connected to a Viewsonic 19" widescreen flat panel monitor. Problem is I can't acheive 1440 x 900 screen resolution settings within the display properties. Any ideas?
